Hey guys,

Lets talk about hollowbody guitars. I've got a POT hollowbody (thanks teochm) and I'm thinking of changing the pickups...the original ones are a little too dark for me although I understand why they were wound that way...was thinking of the all popular SD Jazz and JB set..plus coil splits of course!

What do you guys think? Anyone tried them before in a hollowbody?

Hi there! Hows it doing so far? I didn't have it on my hands long enough to appreciate it. Is it all good? Was thinking of loading it with harmonic design z90s which are on my LP DC now. You might want something sweet sounding like p90s in humbucker size

Although im not a hollowbody type person

Really like that jb/jazz set. Have the jb in all my guitars! and the jazz in 2/3 of them. The jb sounds different in all 3 which proves that the guitar body and neck is a huge differentiator in tone.I presume yours is a semi-hollow type prs copy? Not a hollowbody archtop type design? Then the jazz/jb should do fine there. Cost wise, the set should only be about $160 at Davis. Since its a poppular set, if u don't like it u should be able to sell it away without too much lost.

Alternatively, why not try the filtertron type pickup design for the gretsch type sound? http://www.tvjones.com/home/home.htm
The last hillsong album saw quite a number of guitarist with gretsch.

Hi teochm....its good thanks..sent it for a setup and its great now..just found the sound a little too dark after playing it for some time....can get a little muddy too..
was seriously considering the z90s actually...asked Kangcore bout them too...but i thought I'll try something more versatile first lar..if all else fails ill definitely go for the z90s...u back in Oz?

Shioks...hehe yeah its a prs hollowbody II copy...thats y im not sure how a jb/jazz set will do..anyways, i already bought a set hehe..so we'll see..

Ahh..filtertrons...can be an option to consider too it the jb and jazz doesnt work out..wee bit pricey though..haha

other pickups i was considering were the SD p-rails, HD Z90s, Fralin p92s and even GFS...

Z90s don't strike me as non-versatile.

I don't know what sort of music you play but have you considered the Seymour Duncan Jazz set?

Despite the name, its not the kind of pickup you'll use to play only Jazz. This one can do many things.

Ermmm i was afraid that I wouldnt like the bridge pickup sound actually of the Z90.....and with the z90s i get 3 sounds but if I put in the JB and Jazz set I can split them inner/outer coils and get more variations...having said that, I wouldn't know coz I have not tried it lar..only one way to find out! haha

Whats the jazz set by the way?

The parkers are great especially the green one. Really versatile axe only problem is once u get used to the fly's neck, other guitars neck just seem uncomfortable to play in comparison. The fly mojo is a shred monster, ultra flat radius + wide neck + 24 frets + neck thru. Nothing compares imho. Only wish had enough cash to do a custom fly with emg's and graphics of the dean razorback explosion!!

Wanna trade your your n4 with my pm20 pro? Ive always been gassing for a dedicated rock axe with floyd rose. The pm20 pro's tone is like in between a les paul and a tele. Its single cut shape, mahogany body and wood +fender scale gives it that unique tone. The pm20 pro neck is closer to a tele than the fly. 42mm nut width and c shape neck.

Maybe one of these days if you're free u can come down my place and have some axe comparison tests and some fun. The pm20 pro comes stock with the jb and jazz set, coil tapping for single coil versatility and schaller locking tuners.

Hee hee....guess who is the first owner of this hollowbody? Grinz

Anyway, good choice. It's a very good sounding piece, and it has a LP '59 style round neck with one-of-a-kind butterfly inlays. I owned it for almost 2 years. But due to lack of playing time nowadays, I have thinned out all my gear to minimum. I almost reluctant to let this one go.

I didn't fancy the stock pu. I previously put a pair of Bare Knuckle "The Mule" on this one...one of the best PAF buckers around. To me, it suits this hollowbody perfectly. More like in between an ES335 and a LP, with all the clarity and depth. IMO, a low output, vintage style pu suits this guitar real fine.

Happy
